Ambassador of Bangladesh to the People’s Republic of China

Short Bio

Mr. Md. Nazmul Islam, a career diplomat, joined as the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to the People’s Republic of China on 29 November 2024. In the course of his diplomatic career spanning over 03 (three) decades, Ambassador Islam has held a variety of positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka and Bangladesh Missions abroad. Prior to taking up his assignment in Beijing, he served as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Sultanate of Oman from June 2022 to November 2024. He also served as the Bangladesh Ambassador of Sweden concurrently accredited to Norway and Finland from August 2017 to June 2022.

Mr. Islam joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Assistant Secretary as a member of 15^th Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) cadre in 1995 and served as Assistant Secretary at different wings in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs till October 1999. He then served in the High Commission for the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, London, UK as Second Secretary and later as First Secretary from October 1999 to June 2002. He served in the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Jakarta, Indonesia as First Secretary and later Counsellor from June 2002 to June 2005. He worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka as Director (West Asia) and later as Director (Far East) from June 2005 to July 2007.

Ambassador Islam served in the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Beijing, China as Counsellor from August 2007 to July 2010. He served as the Consul General in the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from August 2010 to June 2014. He also served as the Director General for West and Central Asia Wing and later as Director General responsible Administration in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from July 2014 to August 2017.

Mr. Islam graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). He did Executive Course at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies, Honolulu, USA.

He represented Bangladesh as a member of his country’s delegation in different bilateral meetings.

He is married to Mrs. Nuzhat Nazmul and has one son and one daughter.
